According to the Encarte dictionary, tension is 'the mental worry or emotional strain that makes natural, relaxed behaviour ímpossible'. Do you feel under pressure? Do you feel the tension building? Do you feel you are ready to explode? Take a few moments to smell the flowers, unwind and relax.
Following are a few tips to relieve tension. - Take some deep breaths. Place an open hand on your stomach and breathe in slowly and deeply, feeling your hand move as the stomach expands. Exhale slowly and feel your hand fall as the stomach empties. Repeat up to 10 times. Remember, slow and steady wins the pace.
- Phone a friend. Chatting with a friend is known to produce a hormone called oxytocin which can calm your system and reduce stress levels. You may also catch up on some gossip!
- Laugh. Laughing reduces stress and gives a boost to the immune system. You might even be fortunate to combine this with number 2 above.
- Acupuncture points. Locate the acupuncture points above the eyebrows or behind the temples and gently press with the pads of your fingers for a few minutes. This will allow energy to flow freely.
- Have a 'bout'in bed. It is a well known fact that endorphins are released during sex. These hormones help elevate your mood and alleviate most symptoms of stress.
- Meditate. This practice reduces tension as it allows you to improve your wellness agenda and balance your total body harmony. Meditation is physically and emotionally calming to allow your body and mind to recover.
