Is taking vitamin and mineral supplements necessary as we age?

Unfortunately as we age, our bodies become less forgiving and a bigger effort is required to both stay fit and eat a healthy, well balanced diet. In our younger years, it didn’t seem to be important to care too much about what we ate, however once we reach the 40 plus years, the importance increases as we face the challenge of ageing.

For example, a deficiency in Vitamin C can cause weakness, tiredness, muscle soreness and bleeding gums. Insufficient Vitamin D may cause weak, brittle and deformed bones such as osteoporosis. Red blood cells may be destructed if lacking in Vitamin E. The absence of Vitamin K may lead to the body’s blood clotting mechanism malfunctioning and is also believed to be linked to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamins and minerals are important to ensure that our bodily functions perform as they were designed to do and in order for us to perform at an optimum level, we must feed our bodies with the appropriate quality and quantity of fuel. We depend on getting the nutrients from external sources, mainly in our diet, as the human body is unable to manufacture it’s own. For whatever reason as we age, we often do not get the required vitamins and minerals to fight the ageing process and also the onset of many debilitating conditions.

Free radicals cause oxidation damage, destroying healthy cells, such as when rust develops on cars. As these healthy cells become damaged, the risk of development of heart disease, arthritis, certain forms of cancer, Parkinson’s disease, cataracts and many other disorders increases. As healthy skin cells break down, elasticity is lost and the skin begins to look older, wrinkle and sag. Antioxidants assist in the neutralisation of the free radicals, and aid in having the immune system function properly.

As women age beyond 40 yrs plus, so our nutritional needs change. Many women reduce their level of activity, however their weight doesn’t seem to change too much, suggesting that the metabolic rate also decreases. As we eat less food to maintain our healthy weight range, we have to be more selective in choosing low fat and nutrient rich foods.
