Aromatherapy Bath Oils - How to Create a Healing Heaven in the Bath

Relaxing aromatherapy bath oils - sensuous soak in aromatherapy bath.

The bath has become a tranquil oasis in an otherwise frantic world, with more than 45% of women enjoying a relax in the bath at least once each week. The warmth of the water swathing our bodies, the steam, the heat and the sensational scents and relaxing properties of aromatherapy oils all combine to banish anxieties, allow us to unwind and rejuvenate not only the body but also the mind.

The temperature of the water should be warm enough to luxuriate in and which allows any duration from a 5 minute dip to an hour long soak. Should the water be too hot, the heart will beat faster and subsequently could be dangerous for the elderly or people that have heart conditions, fevers or infections. On the other hand, it is claimed that cold water benefits circulation and also regulates the heart, however it would be difficult to relax and unwind an over-taxed nervous system or nurture a tired body after a long day.

Unfortunately, the romantic notion is to take a glass of wine or bubbly to sip in the bath but alcohol causes blood vessels to dilate and this, combined with the warm water will make you feel more intoxicated.

Enhance your pleasure in the bath by adding a few drops of essential oils. The steam from the warm water will allow more aroma molecules to reach your nose so the scent is more heavenly, potent and powerful.

A luxurious way to deep cleanse and nourish your skin,
ease tired and aching muscles and
lull the mind into a heavenly state of relaxation.

Pure essential oils are strong, so when adding them to the bath water, it is advisable to err on the side of caution. Up to 10 drops is sufficient for a bath for an adult, but use only 2 to 4 drops for children mixed with a carrier oil. If you are at risk of sensitivity, mix the essential oils with a nourishing carrier oil such as almond, avocado or olive oil which will dilute them as well as moisturise the skin. Oils such as clove or tea-tree are more potent so less is required. Use your sense of smell to determine the strength or choice of oils you desire, as more molecules of the oils are sensed by the nose via the steam and therefore magnified once in the bath.

aromatherapy bath oils - How to create heaven in the bathAll essential oils have different aromatic properties, so the benefits you can achieve in mood and experiences will vary depending on the oils used. Determine the mood you wish to achieve before selecting the oils to use. For example, if your desire is to relax, choose oils such as lavender, chamomile, ylang-ylang, rose or sandalwood. If you want something more stimulating, try orange, grapefruit, peppermint, eucalyptus or basil.

Recipes to create your healing heaven:

One of the most popular ways to enjoy aromatherapy is in the bath, and you can feel relaxed and rejuvenated right in your own home. Taking a bath can be wonderful to ease aching muscles, lull the mind into a tranquil state of relaxation as well as treat and deep cleanse the skin.

Run the bath, turn off the taps and then add a few drops of your selected oils. The oils will evaporate if you add the oils while the taps are running. Disperse the oil by whisking your hand quickly over the surface of the water.

Following are some blends (no. drops per oil) of essential oils to promote mood therapy in the bath:

  • Calming blend Chamomile 4, rose 4
  • Euphoric blend Lavender 4, orange 2, clary sage 4
  • Pampering blend Rose 3, neroli 3, lavender 3
  • Balancing blend Geranium 4, neroli 3, rose 2
  • Grounding blend Bergamot 3, lavender 4, sandalwood 3
  • Reviving blend Lemon 2, pine 2, rose 4
  • Uplifting blend Bergamot 4, clary sage 3, ylang-ylang 4

A crucial factor when buying your oils is that you are purchasing the genuine article. Check that the label displays 100 percent pure essential oil. Then look at the price, which generally reflects the cost of the extraction. Some vendors sell ‘fragrance oils’ which are synthetic and not pure botanical essences. These are suitable for burning or spritzing for scent, but will not deliver the healing benefits of genuine essential oils.

Follow any of the above recipes, or make up some of your own. You will be able to use aromatherapy bath oils to create your own

“healing heaven in the bath.”
