Mid Life Crisis - Myth or Reality?

Mid-Life Crisis – Myth or Reality?

“Denial of the ageing process or refusal to age with grace can have fatal consequences”
Mary Dale Scheller
(Growing Older and Feeling Better in Body, Mind and Spirit)

It is a fact that many women cling to youthfulness by spending a lot of time and money rejuvenating their external appearance with such therapies as beauty treatments, hair colours, botox and collagen injections and many courses of cosmetic surgery. This is appropriate if our outer beauty is all that is affected, however both our mind and spirit are going through changes at the same time, and we have to nurture these changes if we are to avoid the reality of a mid-life crisis.

mid life crisis myth or realityOften when a man in mid-life is found to be driving around in a black sports convertible, perhaps begins visiting the local gym, or begins dating a woman half his age, he is ridiculed as attempting to recapture his youth and is going through his mid-life crisis. And that’s the end of it!

However, men do have to accept that their bodies are changing, even though they don’t have periods to lose. This Andropause chapter in a man’s life does cause changes, can bring on night sweats, hot flushes, decreased sex drive, fatigue, decline in drive and ambition along with other symptoms. However, men seem to sail through this period in mid-life with more ease than the majority of women.

As we women of 40 yrs plus and women in mid-life realize that our early years are behind us, both our physical and emotional wellness are going through changes and we must consider all aspects to maintain total wellness through this period in our lives. We do not want to experience the reality of a mid-life crisis.

Firstly, we must overcome the fear associated with menopause and the mid-life crisis. We have arrived at our wisdom years and this time should not be perceived as a time of decay, but with strength and grace, we can travel and enjoy the journey.

Remember, it is the journey that is important. Not the destination. Enter this transformation time with dignity and accept the relinquishing of fertility but not your womanhood.

Bouts of depression, anxiety and mood swings are often experienced by women 40 yrs plus, and these are usually brought about by the many challenges faced at this time of transition such as changing hormone levels, family or career commitments, ageing parents, children leaving creating the empty nest syndrome. Many changes are occurring during this period, and it is common to attribute any emotional problems to the changing hormone levels and label this as a mid-life crisis.

At this time in ones life, libido may diminish, and poor libido brings stress to any relationship. Other physical problems experienced may be lack of energy, the onset of body aches and pains, digestive complaints and the associated weight gain. Due to the diminishing oestrogen levels after menopause, we are also at risk of heart and circulatory problems, breast and other cancers and the accelerated bone loss causes the risk of developing osteoporosis.

The fear of the body ageing can trigger depressed states, however the reality is that treatments and therapies are available for the majority of symptoms suffered during mid-life. Take advantage of these therapies, attempt to de-stress your life, accept the changes and move forward.

This is now time for your new life, so make the appropriate choices, move on and avoid experiencing a mid-life crisis.
