Mental Wellness - Causes of Stress

Identifying the causes of stress is difficult as any number of reasons can cause the body, both physical and mental, to react and each individual’s reaction will differ greatly. In the world today, we face many challenges and the pressure to cope in these situations result in us feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Our bodies are placed under stress attempting to cope with the demands placed on us at the time.

It is a fact that both positive and negative events in one's life can be stressful.

Women 40 yrs Plus Causes of Stress-1Negative events such as problems in a relationship, discovering either yourself or someone close to you has a health problem, losing a job, financial burdens and even commuting in traffic are some situations which create pressure. Positive events such as your children getting married, beginning a new job or moving to a new house, all supposedly happy situations,… in the modern world there is no shortage of possible initiators. These initiators are known as stressors.

Many people think that stress is caused by these stressors (events or external factors). In fact, it is the way that individuals react to these events, and their own capacity to deal with the pressures placed upon them that is stressful.

Individuals react to these stressors very differently. While some will be anxious, others will be stoic. Some people may thrive on the challenge of victory over the demand placed on them, whilst others may feel intimidation, despair and panic at possible failure to overcome the obstacle. Each individual will interpret their experiences in their own way.

The individual’s attitude to the given situation is what is important. If you feel you can overcome serious hurdles quickly or without major loss, you will evaluate fewer external events as a cause for stress. When you do experience it, the degree of stress will be less.

The human body holds a balance – both physical (physiological) and mental (psychological) and if this balance is upset by a stressor, the individual may interpret the situation as being harassed, resulting in stress.
