Testosterone and the Male Menopause.
Symptoms of Male Menopause. Andropause, Testosterone and the Male Menopause.
What is a man’s common reaction whenever menopause is discussed by his significant other? Shrugged shoulders! Perhaps the reaction can be made due to the fact that it is hard to understand something that you do not personally experience. What if men experience menopause? Will they begin to understand a woman’s menopausal plight? The response may be a resounding yes or no. Recent medical studies have shown that women are not the only ones who experience menopause. Yes, apparently men do too. The term, andropause commonly refers to the male menopause. Viropause is another term for male menopause, although this term is not widely used. These terms are used today to describe the cause and/or condition of low testosterone levels. Others may view it as an end to first adulthood and an indication that it is time to begin the second adulthood. Some individuals on the other hand view andropause in a sexual manner, wherein it more significantly refers to the deterioration of sexual desires and performance. This fact may alarm some men, but perhaps they will start to realise and later on comprehend how it feels to have drastic hormonal change. Menopause for women has distinct and defined symptoms such as the cessation of the menstrual cycle, hot flushes which are more evident on the face, chest and neck, excessive perspiration, dryness in the vagina, throbbing pulse, body aches, itching skin, the increase in the growth of hair particularly on the face and with decreasing hair growth in the armpit and pubic area. On the other hand, the reduction of testosterone produced is the most well-defined symptom of male menopause. This should be screened and identified by consulting a physician as a decrease in testosterone may also be associated with other illnesses such as diabetes. Once the production of a man's testosterone level has lessened, the following symptoms may be evident: - He may suffer from physical exhaustion performing simple tasks. His usual alertness and drive to easily accomplish tasks decreases. This tiredness, however, does not contribute to better sleeping patterns. Unfortunately, at this stage, he may suffer from insomnia.
- Furthermore, increase in weight and body fat is evident yet unexplainable.
- Mental fatigue becomes more evident as his ability to concentrate lessens. He may need time to digest items being discussed during a conversation, on written material or even audio-related matters.
- Emotional exhaustion is another symptom of andropause. At this time, a man’s temper varies and shortens. He may feel happy now and suddenly sadness might strike him. Sadness aside, he may depict an angry attitude most of the time. Moreover, a man experiencing male menopause can easily be observed as always nervous.
- Decrease in sexual desire is quite common and this may be due to his failure to get or sustain an erection.
Andropause is not an alarming situation if men have apt knowledge on the facts concerning male menopause. It will also be helpful if he gains knowledge relating to its symptoms so he can gauge whether or not he is suffering from this condition. To further verify the condition, a visit to a physician is highly recommended. The situation will be less distressing for men if their partners support him during this time. If women need heightened support, love and understanding during their menopausal stage, it makes sense that men require it too. Now that there is medical evidence to support there actually is a male version of menopause, maybe then the successor of Adam will be able to understand what a woman’s body goes through when she begins to experience menopause. Perhaps now there will be no more shrugging of shoulders in misunderstanding at his behaviour. Instead there will be a solid yet sympathetic shoulder to lean on in hard times such as when their man undergoes andropause.
